Transportation
Since land separates the three NAFTA countries, land transportation is the most common way to import and export goods from one country to another. In fact, land transportation makes up 80% of the total goods traded within NAFTA. Three types of land transportation are used between Canada, the US, and Mexico: trucks, trains, and pipelines. While trucks and trains carry most goods, pipelines are used to transport oil and other gases across the borders. In addition to land transportation, boats and planes are also used to carry goods from country to country. However, boats are inconvenient because there is little of no water separating the three NAFTA countries. Planes are also inconvenient because the price of fuel is so high compared to the amount of goods a plane can carry.
